Following the completion of the first half of this year’s term, External Affairs of ILSA Chapter UNS once again carried out one of its programs, Alumni Session 2026, on Saturday, 19 September 2026. The session provided Ilsanians with an opportunity to gain insights and learn directly from the experiences of an ILSA Chapter UNS alumnus, while also exploring opportunities for personal, academic, and professional development beyond the classroom.
This year’s Alumni Session featured Lucky Surya Jaya, S.H., an alumnus of ILSA Chapter UNS who previously served on the Board as Vice President of the International Law Development Division. During his time as an Ilsanian, Kak Lucky was actively involved in various activities and international competitions, as well as scholarship programs. His experiences both within and beyond ILSA Chapter UNS provided valuable perspectives for participants, particularly in understanding how opportunities during university can contribute to their future development.
Carrying the theme “Stepping into International Mooting: Exploring Opportunities and Impact,” Alumni Session 2026 focused on introducing Ilsanians to the world of international moot court competitions. The session highlighted international mooting not only as a competitive platform, but also as an opportunity for students to develop various skills, expand their experiences, and explore new possibilities within the field of law.
During the session, Kak Lucky introduced participants to international moot court competitions and shared an overview of what students may encounter when taking their first steps into international mooting. He discussed the preparation process, the challenges that may arise along the way, and the learning experiences that can be gained throughout the journey. Through his personal experiences, participants were encouraged to understand that joining an international competition is not solely about the final result, but also about the process of learning, challenging oneself, and developing skills along the way.
The discussion also explored the broader impact that international competition experiences can have on students’ academic and professional journeys. International mooting allows students to engage with legal issues from a broader perspective while simultaneously developing skills such as legal research, legal writing, advocacy, critical thinking, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. These experiences can also become part of a student’s professional profile and provide opportunities to build meaningful connections with individuals from different backgrounds and institutions.
With his professional experience in Human Resources (HR), Kak Lucky further shared his perspective on how experiences gained during university may be viewed in a professional setting. The session encouraged participants to recognize that academic achievements are only one part of professional development. Experiences in competitions, organizations, projects, and other activities can also help students develop and demonstrate transferable skills that may be valuable in their future careers.
The theme was particularly relevant for newly recruited trainee members of ILSA Chapter UNS. As students who are beginning their journey within the organization, the session served as an introduction to one of the many opportunities available to Ilsanians. By learning about international mooting from someone who had experienced it firsthand, participants were given a closer look at what it means to step into an international competition and what they may gain from taking that opportunity.
Beyond introducing the technical aspects and challenges of international mooting, Alumni Session 2026 also sought to encourage Ilsanians to become more confident in exploring opportunities outside their comfort zones. The session emphasized the importance of being willing to try, learn from challenges, and make use of the opportunities available during university. For trainee members in particular, this served as an early introduction to the possibility of becoming involved in international competitions and exploring different paths for their future development.
The event consisted of an opening session, welcoming remarks, a presentation by the speaker, an interactive discussion, and a closing session. Throughout the program, participants actively engaged with Kak Lucky through questions and discussions. The interaction between the speaker and participants created an engaging and welcoming atmosphere, allowing the session to go beyond a one-way presentation and become a space for exchanging experiences and perspectives.
More than simply discussing international moot court competitions, Alumni Session 2026 became a space for Ilsanians to reflect on the value of experiences gained throughout their university journey. Every opportunity to participate, challenge oneself, collaborate with others, and step into unfamiliar environments can become part of a broader learning process. Through this session, participants were encouraged to see international mooting as one of the avenues through which they can explore their interests, strengthen their skills, and discover new possibilities for their future.
The session also reflected the importance of alumni engagement within ILSA Chapter UNS. Through programs such as Alumni Session, the experiences and knowledge gained by previous generations of Ilsanians can be shared with current members, creating a continuous exchange between alumni and the organization. These interactions allow current Ilsanians to gain practical perspectives while also strengthening the connection between different generations of the ILSA Chapter UNS community.
External Affairs of ILSA Chapter UNS would like to express its sincere gratitude to Kak Lucky Surya Jaya, S.H., for sharing his valuable experiences, insights, and perspectives throughout Alumni Session 2026. We would also like to extend our appreciation to all Ilsanians who attended and actively participated in the session. Your curiosity, enthusiasm, and engagement contributed to making the event an insightful and meaningful experience for everyone involved.
Through Alumni Session 2026, ILSA Chapter UNS hopes to continue creating opportunities for its members to learn from one another, explore new possibilities, and grow beyond the boundaries of the classroom. May this session inspire more Ilsanians to take their first steps into international mooting, embrace new challenges, and make the most of every opportunity along their journey.
Best Regards,
ILSA Chapter UNS
