ILSA Chapter UNS

HISTORY OF ILSA CHAPTER UNS

The International Law Students Association (ILSA) Chapter Sebelas Maret University (UNS) is a transformation from the International Law Community (ILC), a community that engaged in academia, especially international law. This community was formed around 2000 to accommodate students who participated in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. In 2007, ILC was not yet known as a community. In 2009-2010 this community declared itself under the name ILC and received non-formal recognition from lecturers in the International Law Department of the Faculty of Law (FH) UNS. In 2010, ILC became a student study and discussion community with a talent interest in international law, as well as a forum for students to participate in the International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition (IHL) organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Indonesia – East Timor. Legally and formally, ILC obtained official recognition from the Faculty of Law UNS as a community at the end of 2015.

In the context of organizational progress, in mid-2017, there was a discourse to transform ILC into the Asian Law Students’ Association (ALSA) or ILSA, which underlies the formation of a special committee at the 2017 Conference. The committee was formed to investigate the strengths and weaknesses of the transformation to ALSA / ILSA. Based on the Conference, which was held in November 2018, it was decided that ILC had not yet decided whether to choose ALSA / ILSA. Instead, ILC formed a Special Advanced Committee to research further and extensively regarding the transformation. Finally, on November 28, 2019, the ILC Conference passed a decree called Decree Number: 001 / Tap / Con / XI / 2019, which changed ILC to ILSA. A new Special Committee was formed to conduct the transition from ILC to ILSA Chapter UNS.

In December 2019, ILC registered itself as a member of the ILSA based on the results of the Conference and previous decrees. In January 2020, ILC officially joined ILSA. On August 21, 2020, it officially legally transformed into ILSA Chapter UNS with the issuance of the Decree of the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Sebelas Maret Number: 3303 / UN 27.03 / KM / 2020 concerning the Transformation of the International Law Community became the International Law Student Association, Faculty of Law, Universitas Sebelas Maret. Currently, ILSA Chapter UNS has a secretariat at Ikatan Keluarga Alumni (IKA) FH UNS Building, 2nd Floor No.7, Jl. Ir Sutami No.36 A, Surakarta, 57126.

Before transforming into ILSA, ILC developed members’ abilities through various activities such as research studies, discussions, film reviews, and competitions revolving on contemporary issues of International Law. ILC also often participated in competitions to facilitate Members’ interests and talents, such as the International Moot Court Competition (IMCC), Model United Nations (MUN), English Debate, Scientific Work, and similar events.
From the competitions that have been followed, ILC has made various proud achievements. Even in its running as ILSA Chapter UNS, it will continue its achievements to realize progress for the ILSA Chapter UNS as a valuable forum for students.
