Iran Protest: A Deeply Worrying Violation of Children’s Rights
By: Agnes Ariningtyas
People have been protesting across Iran for nearly a month, defying a deadly crackdown by security forces. The demonstrations are seen as the most serious challenge to the Iranian authorities in decades.
It all begun with the passing of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old lady captured by ethical quality police in Tehran on 13 September. A month after demonstrations erupted across Iran, the unabated violent response by security forces against protesters, and reports of arbitrary arrests and the killing and detention of children are deeply worrying.
Since 18 September 2022, over one thousand protesters, human rights defenders, civil society activists, journalists, university students and school children have been arbitrarily arrested and detained, some already charged with “acting against national security.” This cycle of deadly repression in the context of protests has become alarmingly familiar in recent years.
